Our annual Ironman Training Camp. Train on and around the Taupo course and gain confidence to take on the big dance a month later. It is a great opportunity for you to test your limits and learn from those Athletes and Coaches around you. Limited to 20 people.

Registration will close off 6 Jan 2024 so we can finalise attendance numbers.

Camp Schedule:

Below is the schedule of sessions (subject to change if need be).

Where possible we have added course maps, so please make yourself familiar with these (print them out, upload to your GPS device, save as a pic on your phone etc).

Friday 26 Jan: Endurance Ride + Tech Swim

09:00am: Meet at carpark on Story Place behind Police Station, adjacent to the old Transition.

76km Endurance ride

58km Endurance ride

13:00: Easy 30min Run.  Choose your own course, not a planned Camp session.

16:00-17:00: Pool Technique session at AC Baths

Saturday 27 Jan:  Long Ride + Run

07:00-15:00: This is the one you all came for.  Round Lake Taupo + Tokaanu Saddle.

Meet at the carpark Story Place.  If you are driving here first just be aware of parking times if you are going to park in the area.  We suggest you park a bit further away where there won't be time restrictions and just ride to meet us.  Better still would be to ride to meet us there.

This is a 200km ride, treat it as just a long day in the saddle, not as a Time Trial.  It's a long way and there are some long hills, but there are also some amazing views.  The course can be viewed here https://www.strava.com/routes/11805662

You will be sent off in groups matched to your ability.  That way you will be getting the most out of the session as you can and it's safer having small groups on the road instead of one large peloton.

We will have support cars with extra food and drink, but you should also have enough for yourself, including spare tyres and a multitool kit.  The longer the day goes the more spread out the group gets, so it's harder for the support car to reach everyone.

After about 150km you will reach Turangi and it's a great place for a Pie and Coke, and maybe a Fruju.

If you want to just do the loop of the lake without the Saddle you are most welcome to.  The course can be viewed here https://www.strava.com/routes/11805705

15:00-15:30: 30 minute run off the bike from your accommodation.

Sunday 28 Jan:  SBR Brick

06:45: Meet at Kaimanawa Pavilion on Kaimanawa Road, adjacent to Transition area.  We will walk down to the Lake Front when everyone has arrived.

07:00-08:15: Full Ironman Course Swim on the new Ironman course (you can cut it short if you wish).  We will walk back together to the pavilion as a group.  We will have an early group heading out for those expecting to take longer than 1:20 for the swim leg

08:30-11:30: 90km Ironman/70.3 Pace Interval Bike session

This will follow the IMNZ/70.3 Bike course.  Complete one lap of the course.

If you aren't familiar with the new course have a look at IRONMAN NZ website. You can also view the course through this link, and download to your GPS device.

When taking the out/back portions of the course please be very careful when turning around.  Be aware of traffic behind and in front and loose chip on the road.

For the IM athletes, after the Race Track you will perform 3 x 20km at your own IM effort, with 5km relaxed spin between

For the 70.3 athletes, after the Race Track you will perform 6 x 10km at your own 70.3 effort, with 3km relaxed spin between

Try to avoid drafting through these intervals.  Treat it as a race situation.

11:45-12:45: 30-45min Ironman Pace Interval Run session

Run this from the Ironman Transition site and along the Lake Front, following the Ironman course on the IRONMAN NZ website.  Include 3 - 5 x 5min at your own IM effort, 2-3min easy jog between.  Steady pace for the remainder.  If you are doing the 70.3 then do the efforts at your 70.3 effort.

You should fuel between the bike and the run so you aren't depleted through this.

18:30-20:30 Team dinner, details TBC

Monday 29 Jan:  Short Swim + Long Run

09:00-09:45: Swim. Meet at the carpark area across the road from Northcroft Reserve. We will walk down to the lake from there for an Open Water skills session

10:00-1:00: Long Run Course (25-32km options). This is to follow the IM run course. We will have an aid station set up for you to make the most of during the run session.
