Rebel Iron

St Heliers Auckland
The event occured in the past
Not IRONMAN New Zealand, but given the current situation with Covid19 it's about as good as you can get...and some would say better. Let's keep this Low Key and only for our community.
Rebel Iron
So our key race for the season has been ripped out from under us, but we still want you to have some sort of Endurance Event that you can get your teeth stuck into.
We present to you the solo Rebel Iron....3.8km, 150km, <30km.
What makes this special is it's a solo training session, that just happens to have a few of your training buddies along with you. The emphasis here is that it's solo, it's not a group workout.
The really cool thing about the route we're suggesting for you is it's covering much of the original Auckland Ironman course - swim in St Heliers, cycle to Matingarahi and back, run to Pakuranga to St Heliers, through to Mission Bay to finish at St Heliers again. A very special course indeed, and covering the tracks of the original NZ Ironman legends.
The really important thing here is that everyone understands it's a solo self supported training day. You will need to carry your own food and drink (or have someone meet you along the way, or stop at shops to refill). Everyone has to know the course, and you need to be responsible for going the correct way. Strava links are posted below for viewing the course, so we suggest you print them out or sync them to your GPS devices to follow the course. I suspect you will have a few people around you at various times through the day, and whilst it's fine on the run, you will need to be super careful of traffic on the road when riding with others.
At 6:30am we will meet at Vellenoweth Green across from the Boat Ramp to discuss how the day will go. You can park your car somewhere around here, and that will be the spot for your transition. There won't be people hanging around all day here, so you will need to make sure you lock everything securely in your cars before going on to the next session. We can start ferrying people to the swim start at Glendowie Boating Club off Glendowie Road.
Swim 3.8km
The swim will start at Glendowie Boating club at 7:00am. Tide is incoming so there will be a nice flow as you travel around the point towards St Heliers. Once you round Achilles Point you will swim to the right of the white stick and continue straight to exit the swim at the Boat Ramp, across from Vellenoweth Green. The will be the only arranged supported group session for the day.
We will have safety crew on SUP boards and in a Kayak to make sure you are ok, and heading in the right direction.
Everyone will have to wear their Foot Traffic swim cap in the water. Let us know if you need one.
Bike 150km
This bike course will take you out to the original Auckland Ironman bike turn around outside the house of ML Adams at Matingarahi. You will then follow the same route back, but via a short out n back down Ness Valley, as they did on race day back then too.
Make sure you know the course and are safe on the roads in the traffic.

Run upto 30km
As per the original Auckland Ironman run course you will head out along the hills of Glendowie, through Glen Innes to turn around across the road from the Pakuranga Town Centre. Return the exact same way to make it 25km. If you want to continue on to Mission Bay, and then back to St Heliers, you will make it up to 30km.
Remember to know the course, have enough drink with you, or have someone riding along beside you with drink and fuel to keep you going strong.

After your workout you will probably find a few of the crew rehydrating and sharing stories from the day down the road a Moretons.
